May 26, 2026 In April 2026, the National Futures Association (NFA) issued Notice to Members I-26-12, a sweeping directive aimed at modernizing its registration process. The mandate was clear: Effective October 1, 2026, the NFA will officially abandon hard-copy fingerprint submissions for individuals requiring background checks. Instead, all applicants must transition to a fully digital system operated by Fieldprint—a biometric service vendor and FBI-approved Channeler. On paper, the logic is sound. Digital processing dramatically cuts down processing times, dropping background check turnarounds from weeks to less than an hour. But as the compliance world knows all too well, transitioning a massive regulatory apparatus from legacy paper to digital infrastructure rarely goes off without a hitch.Turnkey Trading Partners (Turnkey) has had a front row seat to this transition from the very beginning. As the industry leader in NFA registration and compliance assistance, our team works directly with firms navigating registrations, amendments, onboarding, and regulatory filings every single day. Because we are involved in the process at scale across a broad range of applicants and registrants, we often see operational bottlenecks, implementation issues, and evolving regulator expectations long before they become widely discussed throughout the industry.A handful of early participants who jumped on the new system right away found themselves stuck in regulatory limbo, with their fingerprints seemingly vanishing into thin air. Thankfully, the Turnkey team has already been assisting firms and applicants specifically with the new Fieldprint transition, helping troubleshoot submission issues, navigate processing delays, and coordinate with the appropriate parties to ensure fingerprint records are properly received and linked within the NFA registration system. The Missing Piece: The BIG SurpriseWhen the NFA first pushed out the news about the Fieldprint service, the initial instructions appeared straightforward: firms were told that they needed to activate an account with Business Information Group (BIG), Fieldprint’s sister company, then U.S.-based individuals could simply go to the Fieldprint website, use their firm’s unique code, and schedule an appointment. The problem? The NFA completely omitted a massive prerequisite from those original directions. They failed to mention where firms could activate an account with BIG. The BIG website provides no activation portal or guidance.Because this crucial step wasn’t in the initial workflow, early adopters have been confused and unable to complete the process. They have gone to Fieldprint, got their digital prints taken, and assumed they had done so correctly. Instead, because the baseline firm accounts hadn’t been activated through BIG, the prints were not “linked” to anything, and NFA never received the fingerprints.Recognizing the blunder after early users got squeezed, the NFA quietly updated its public notices and FAQs to weave in the BIG account activation hyperlink; this is not readily apparent to users as a pathway to the activation portal. But for the individuals whose prints are already floating in the digital ether, a manual workaround is required to fix the issue. The Retroactive Fix: Getting Out of LimboIf you or your Associated Persons were part of the initial wave and have had fingerprints get lost in the transition, the fix requires going back to execute the step the NFA originally left out. The member firm must manually onboard through the dedicated portal to retroactively link the accounts:The Link: Member firms must register directly via the specialized portal:BIG-NFA Sign-in PortalThe Step-by-Step Workflow:Firm Onboarding: The Member firm visits the BIG portal and enters its NFA ID (excluding any leading zeros) to initiate registration.Execute the Agreement: The firm signs the BIG Service Agreement and selects whether the firm or the individual will cover the $17.50 processing fee.Generate the Code: Upon completion, BIG issues the unique Fieldprint code to the firm.Individual Re-alignment: The firm distributes this code to its applicants so their profiles can be properly linked on the Fieldprint scheduling site, allowing the trapped prints to finally route to the NFA.Frustration Behind the ScenesThe rollout has generated frustration among firms and service providers navigating the transition. According to sources involved in resolving onboarding delays, some applicants became stuck in the process and required manual intervention from account representatives to move forward.Several industry participants noted that, despite the NFA spending years developing the digital transition, the initial launch instructions did not clearly address a key onboarding step. As a result, firms and third-party providers were left managing delays and workarounds during the early stages of implementation. With the October 1, 2026 deadline approaching, many expect the process to become more streamlined as updated guidance is adopted. Still, the initial rollout has highlighted some of the operational challenges that can accompany large-scale regulatory technology changes. How Turnkey Can HelpAs the industry continues adapting to the NFA’s new digital fingerprinting framework, firms should expect additional procedural refinements, evolving guidance, and occasional operational hiccups along the way. Having an experienced compliance partner that understands both the regulatory requirements and the practical realities of the registration process can make a significant difference in avoiding delays and keeping onboarding initiatives on track. Turnkey Trading Partners remains at the forefront of these developments and continues to assist firms across the industry with navigating the Fieldprint transition, resolving registration complications, and streamlining the overall NFA onboarding process.
